Rio Muchacho offers unpaid internships for people who have skills that help the farm run smoothly and help the local communities. Internships are often a minimum of 6 months and are provided in exchange of accommodation and food at the farm. We do, however, ask that all interns pay for the first month of their stay. This helps us while you are still learning the ropes and lowers the risk for us of taking someone on that has unknown abilities.

Marketing, Communications and Social Networking

This internship provides practical experience in tourism communications, social networking, social outreach, and marketing in a social enterprise. The intern would be responsible for updating and controlling our Facebook, Instagram accounts, creating short movies about the farm, marketing events, tours and volunteer opportunities at the farm, etc.

Ecotourism

Río Muchacho offers a 7 month internship in ecotourism for 1 or 2 people, usually from May to December and November to June (with a one-month overlap between outgoing and incoming interns).

This internship provides practical experience in many aspects of tourism, from selling and organizing tours to acting as guide and interpreter. One of the most important functions of the ecotourism intern is to be ´farm host´, welcoming and accommodating all visitors to the farm, both tourists and volunteers.

The intern needs to be very organized and friendly, with the ability to keep track of arrivals and departures on the farm while still taking care of those who are already here.

Other responsibilities may include:

Booking tours and providing tourist information, running our internet café service, selling merchandise
Selling fair-trade goods on the farm, cleaning and taking inventory, handling money and deposits;
Organizing volunteer work and tourist activities;
Revising, typing and translating informational and promotional documents;
Maintaining certain areas of the farm (providing access to security lockers and store rooms, Keeping inventories, cleaning and organizing informational areas, making sure our guest cabins/bathrooms are clean and prepared).
In order to successfully see to these responsibilities, the intern will need to gain thorough knowledge of all tours we sell, relevant tourism information (i.e. bus schedules and travel information, nearby places of interest etc.), geography and history of this area, and knowledge of the farm and its people, plants, and processes.

Interns should be welcoming and open, organized and reliable, confident and flexible when dealing with unexpected or unusual situations.

This position is dynamic and requires the ability to effectively multi-task, coordinate, and manage many different groups with differing (and sometimes conflicting) needs and desires. As with all visitors to Ecuador, interns should understand that things do not happen as quickly or reliably here as they may be accustomed to; patience and a good sense of humor are essential.

Students of tourism or a related discipline are best suited and will be given preference; we also require at least an intermediate level of Spanish. This is an unpaid position, but the intern will have food and board provided at Río Muchacho Organic Farm. Along with the skills gained from this experience, documentation and references can be provided upon successful completion of the internship.

Sustainability

This opportunity, like the ecotourism internship, is for a 6 month period for 1 or 2 people and is offered in exchange for food and accommodation at the farm. It is available for people that speak Spanish as a first language.

The sustainability internship involves a broad cross-section of life at Río Muchacho and an involvement in most areas of work at the farm.

The internship may include:

Involvement in community work, such as various educational extension programs and construction projects
Work within and related to the development of environmental education
Facilitating communication within the farm and community
Preparing documents and other information and attending meetings for the coordination of work efforts

Graphic design

This internship provides practical experience in tourism, social media, social outreach, and creating graphics for our farm. We are in the works of creating our Information Centre, and our Interactive Learning Centre for children, and the intern would be responsible for creating plans, graphics, and various other things for these centres. An internship at Rio Muchacho provides professional development in tourism-related fields and an opportunity to learn Spanish, agriculture and permaculture.

Minimum 2 months

Río Muchacho ofrece pasantías no remuneradas para personas que tienen habilidades que ayudan a que la finca funcione mejor y que, además, ayuden a las comunidades locales. Marketing, Comunicaciones y Redes Sociales

Esta pasantía provee experiencia práctica en turismo, comunicaciones, redes sociales, divulgación social y marketing en una empresa social. El/la interno/a sería responsable de poner al día la página web y controlar nuestras cuentas de Facebook e Instagram, crear pequeños videos sobre la finca, eventos de marketing, tours y oportunidades de voluntariado en la finca, etc.

Prácticas en Ecoturismo

Esta pasantía ofrece experiencia práctica en muchos aspectos del turismo, desde la venta y la organización de toures, hasta actuar como guía o intérprete. Una de las funciones más importantes del/de la interno/a de ecoturismo es ser “farm host” (anfitrión de la finca), acogedor y atento a todos los visitantes, los turistas y voluntarios.

El interno tiene que ser muy organizado y amable, con la capacidad de realizar un seguimiento de las llegadas y salidas en la finca mientras sigue cuidando de los que ya están aquí.

Otras responsabilidades pueden incluir:

Hacer reservaciones de toures y proveer información turística
Vender en la tienda comunitaria “fair-trade” (mercado justo) en la finca, limpiar y hacer inventarios, manejar dinero y hacer depósitos
Organizar el trabajo de voluntarios y actividades turísticas
Revisar, escribir y traducir documentos informativos o promocionales
Hacer el mantenimiento de determinadas zonas de la finca (proporcionar acceso a armarios de seguridad y bodegas, limpieza y organización de áreas de información, asegurarse de revisar la buena presentación de los baños sociales).
Con el objeto de poder llevar a cabo todas estas responsabilidades, el interno necesitará ganar mucho conocimiento sobre los toures que proponemos, información turística relevante (i.e. horarios de buses e información de viajes, lugares cercanos con internet, etc.), geografía e historia del área y, deberá obtener mucha experiencia sobre la finca con su gente, sus plantas, equipos, sistemas y sus procesos administrativos.

Los internos deben ser acogedores y abiertos, organizados y confiables, seguros de sí mismos y flexibles cuando se trata de situaciones inesperadas o inusuales.

Esta posición es dinámica y requiere la capacidad de multi-tarea, mente ágil y abierta, coordinar con eficacia y gestionar muchos grupos diferentes con diferentes (y a veces contradictorias) necesidades y deseos. Al igual que con todos los visitantes a Ecuador, los internos deben entender que las cosas no suceden tan rápido o de forma fiable aquí, ya que pueden no estar acostumbrados a esto; paciencia y un buen sentido del humor son esenciales.

Los estudiantes de turismo o una disciplina relacionada son los más adecuados y se les dará preferencia; también requerimos al menos un nivel intermedio de español. Esta es una posición no remunerada, pero el interno tendrá hospedaje y comida proporcionada en Río Muchacho. Junto con las habilidades adquiridas en esta experiencia, la documentación, certificados y referencias se pueden proporcionar al término de la pasantía. Esta pasantía es válida para crédito universitario.

Prácticas de Sustentabilidad

La práctica de sustentabilidad influye en una amplia sección de la vida en Río Muchacho e implica una participación en la mayoría de las áreas de trabajo en la finca.

La pasantía puede incluir:

La participación en el trabajo comunitario, las reuniones del Cabildo Comunitario, diversos programas de extensión educativa y proyectos de construcción
Actividades relacionadas con educación ambiental
Facilitar la comunicación dentro de la finca y la comunidad
Facilitar el fortalecimiento del grupo comunitario de agricultores orgánicos
Preparación de documentos u otra información y asistencia a reuniones para la coordinación de esfuerzos de trabajo con la comunidad o la Junta Parroquial de Canoa.

Diseño gráfico

Estamos en proceso de construir un Centro de Información y un Centro Interactivo de Aprendizaje Infantil y el interno sería responsable de crear planos, gráficos y muchas otras cosas para estos centros. Una pasantía en Río Muchacho provee desarrollo profesional en temas relacionados con el turismo y una oportunidad para aprender español, mejorar el inglés, agricultura y permacultura.

Mínimo 2 meses.

La pasantía sería a cambio de comida y alojamiento proporcionado por el parque. Se prefiere un mínimo de tres meses.
